Half if the Cat Ba island and 52 square kilometers of the surrounding inland waters are part of the Cat Ba National Park (Vuon Quoc Gia Cat Ba). The thickly forested island has a rich diversity of flora and fauna, including 69 species of bird - among them the hornbill – numerous reptiles and 32 species of mammals, including wild cats, boar, porcupines, various monkeys and deer. However, you are fairly unlikely to see anything other than birds and insects - and possibly primated - whilst hiking the park's many paths. The golden headed langur, for example, unique to Cat Ba island, is in danger of extinction as ther are just 68 left in existence.
