Ngoc Vung island or Pearl island, together with Net and Phuong Hoang islands belongs to Van Don district. There is a belief that many species of rare and precious pearls can lighten up the sky all night. So people named it Ngoc Vung. Also in the vicinity is Minh Chau island. Seen from the sky above, Ngoc Vung island is beautiful and looks like a velvet shawl with a white fringe floating on the water. There is a hundred meters-long sand beach in the east of the island, very wise at the water’s edge.
From Mat Rong cliff, we can view all places on Co To island. There is luxuriant, shady Bengamin fig tree here under which, on his 1962 visit to the island. Uncle Ho stood to have talks with local people. In the struggle against American Imperialism, Ngoc Vung island was one of the fronts protecting the wastern skies of Vietnam. Local people here struggled with such courage the place became known as Brave island. Right on the white sand in te wast of the island, stone belonging to Halong culture in the post Neolithich epoch were first discovered in 1937 inaugurating a time of exploration and archeological research to decode the secrets of ancient Halong. Nowaday, there still exists on the island an ancient site called Cong Yen, which was part of the ancient trading network of Van Don.
