“Lovely small boat only 5 cabins. Very friendly crew. Cruise away from Halong Bay” from Sam Smith – Harbour, Australia
chose this cruise based on the fact that they cruise away from busy Halong Bay so less pollution and no other boats except the Indochina Sails boats ( that we saw). Excellent food on board. The area is magnificent. We stopped in the afternoon for a swim or kayak on a little beach and went into a cave on that island and at the end of the cave walk there is a lovely view of the bay from up the hill. The whole trip goes very quickly. But overnight was enough time for us. You will be asked to tip the staff and tour guide at the end. I would rather see the company charge a few extra dollars and pass that on to the staff, it is not nice to be asked to tip. The drive there is excruciating – 4 hours in traffic that is dangerous. ( we had a private transfer. Not the bus arranged by the tour company, maybe that would have been better) I felt quite unsafe in the car – we had a few VERY close calls with trucks and busses head on. For that reason I personally would not do the trip again, but that said I am glad we experienced Halong Bay.
Visited April 2012“One of the things you must do before you die. A Dream” from Hutch – Durham, United Kingdom
We went on a 2 night tour of Halong Bay in Red Dragon 2 Junk and found it one of the most beautiful places on planet earth, From arriving on the 4 couples only Junk. 2 Germans, 2 French, and 4 British, The Crew where fantastic the food was fantastic and the cruise itself was fantastic. We went to Bai Tu Long and did some Kayaking also went ashore and walked into a cave, then off to a floating fishing village to look at how the people live in there little boat houses, and the kids school, and fishing boats, from day one this was an experience what will last with me forever and highly recommend, to anyone who wants the peace and tranquillity this package provides, food was 5 star from a very small crew, I could not have asked for better service, the whole package was totally fantastic and does not need changing.
Visited March 2012“Great cruise on the Red Dagon” from Shanka – Chennai ( Madras ), India
There are apparently two Red Dagon ships, and we went on the second. Everything everyone has written is correct – the level of service, the facilities on board, the side trips were all excellent.
I wanted to mention one fact that vegetarians like me will find useful – not only did they serve us cooked (Vietnamese) vegetarian meals, they took pains to match the regular meals others had on board on a course to course basis and varied the dishes across the three meals we had on board so that we did not feel like afterthoughts. That, to me, was very valuable.
On the evening of Day 1 we had a nice side trip to a private beach where we went caving, kayaking, swimming and some of us played football on the beach. On Day 2 it was a visit to a fishing village inside the bay.
The only thing that I found a little discordant was that we had to check out of our rooms at 10am on Day 2 while while the boat was still at sea and hang around on deck. I suppose this is because they have left themselves very little turnaround time between the end on a trip and the start of the next. However the overall experience was very good, and the new friends we made were the icing on the cake.
